FALL TRIP TO THE PUMPKIN PATCH
Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year. The temperatures finally start to drop, the leaves change color, and most importantly, it’s hunting season. Reese is finally old enough to accompany me on some hunts throughout the fall, but Brinley is too young, and Greta would just assume do something else. One of the many great things about living in the Fargo-Moorhead area are the many great pumpkin patches! A trip to the pumpkin patch has become one of our favorite family fall traditions. It is such a great way to get outside and enjoy the outdoors as a family.
For this year’s trip to the pumpkin patch, we found a little gem in north Moorhead called Probstfield Farms. Open on Sundays, we decided to make our way there following church. It was an absolutely, gorgeous fall day and the kids were excited to pick out some pumpkins for Halloween. I wasn’t even out of the truck yet, and Reese was off to the races. He was in search of the biggest pumpkin in the patch. Brinley was a little more methodical in her approach, taking it all in as she walked. After all, she had pretty much just turned one before her first pumpkin patch experience.
We weren’t too far into the patch when Reese found his prize. I was also in search of the biggest pumpkin I could find when I looked over and noticed Reese bent over patting his pumpkin with an ear-to-ear smile. I knew he had found, “The One”. It was so big that we had to get a wheelbarrow just to cart it around. Not too far from Reese’s pumpkin, we found another one of the large variety and had to stop for a family photo.
Once the big ones were out of the way, we set out to find a couple of small pumpkins for Reese and Brinley to bring to school. It didn’t take us long to find a couple of nice pumpkins and this time Reese could experience a set of clippers and clip the pumpkins from the vine on his own, with supervision of course! As soon as Brinley saw Reese cutting the pumpkin from the vine, she had to try as well. We needed some squash to accompany our pumpkins home so there was ample opportunity for her to get in on the cutting action. She was a proud little girl with her squash…and clippers, and wrestling them away from her was no easy task.
By the end of the trip we had one happy boy, a thirsty girl, and a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins and squash. And if that area hadn’t been recently annexed into the city of Moorhead, I may have had a new hunting spot. In the end, our trip to the pumpkin patch was a great family outing and the kids had a great time spending a beautiful fall day experiencing the outdoors. Easily one of our favorite fall traditions, and I can’t wait to see what patch we pick next year.
